Family Day was introduced in Saskatchewan in 2007. It is on the third Monday of February. This holiday celebrates the importance of family and family life to people and their communities. Families are busy! Kids are spending hours at extracurricular activities and parents spend at work. Family Day has been a positive step to give parents and children a day to reconnect and share some quality time.
Start with a hearty breakfast
This is a great way to begin since it’s the most important meal of the day! Get everyone involved – Dad can make coffee and freshly-squeezed orange juice, kids can break eggs and stir pancake batter, Mom can bake muffins. Make Family Day special by cooking family favorites.
Go for a walk
After a big breakfast, a good walk is always welcome. You can make a snowman or igloo with your children.
Reconnect with the past
Family Day is about learning about our heritage. Bring out old family albums or videos, and share stories and memories. Check out the museum, some offer fun activities for kids.
Let the kids choose
Encourage your children to choose something they would like to do. Do a family craft, if they like art. Play a game of street hockey, if they like sports. Play a board game or Wii Bowling, if they love games.
Expand the family dinner
Pick up the phone and arrange a large dinner with your extended family, either at someone’s home or at a restaurant to maintain valuable family relationships.
These tips may not slow families down, but they’ll keep you busy doing positive, family-centered activities. That is what Family Day is all about!
