Home Safety Tips: Birth to One Year

Microsoft Word - Document1

Your baby needs you to provide a safe, healthy and loving home to learn and grow in.

Your baby will cry to tell you that she wants or needs something.  If you are not able to calm your baby, remember it is not your or your baby’s fault.  If you are feeling upset, put your baby down in a safe place and walk away for 5 -10 minutes.    NEVER shake your baby.

Always take your baby with you when you leave a room, or place your baby in a safe place, such as her crib.  Never leave a baby alone with pet or a child under 4 years of age.

When your baby is off the floor, keep your eyes and a hand on her at all times.  Before diapering, place everything you need within arm’s reach.  Baby can wiggle and squirm off before you know it!

Watch your baby at bath time.   Be sure baby’s bath water is lukewarm, never hot.

Always check temperature before giving a bottle to your baby.  Be sure to mash, cut, chop or grate foods for your baby.  Don’t carry your baby while you are carrying anything hot.

Use wall mounted safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs in your home.  Remove strings, cords and ribbons from your baby’s clothes and from blinds.

Take CPR and First Aid so that you know what to do in case of an emergency.  Plan fire escape routes from your home.  Keep carbon monoxide and smoke detectors in working order.
