What does sleep look like at different ages?
0-3 months: typically babies this age have a very irregular sleep pattern. They tend to nap throughout the day and night, waking often to be fed. Their sleep may be restless, as their brain is very active. They may cry out, move, change facial expressions, breathe irregularly, grunt, snort, and twitch a lot.
3-6 months: Your baby will begin to develop more regularity to their sleep pattern. This allows your baby to have longer periods of deep sleep. This means that baby will likely breathe quietly, lay still, and can be harder to wake up.
6+ Months: By this age, your baby is likely to stay away for 3-4 hours at a time. As your baby learns new skills (sitting, crawling, walking) the excitement and frustration of these milestones may affect their sleep patterns.
How Much Do Babies Sleep?
Every baby is different. For some month old infants, sleeping 9 hours in a day is normal, and others may sleep 19 hours in a 24 hour period. By 1 year old, babies will typically sleep between 11-17 hours per day. Keep in mind that this sleep does not necessarily all occur at night!
